⇒SETTLER, subst. masc.
Immigrant qui s'établit dans un territoire nouvellement découvert ou dans une colonie; en partic., celui qui prend possession d'une terre jusque-là inculte. On compte dans les provinces de Victoria, de la Nouvelle Galles du sud et de l'Australie méridionale plus de trois mille stations, les unes dirigées par les squatters qui élèvent le bétail, les autres par les settlers, dont la principale industrie est la culture du sol (VERNE, Enf. cap. Grant, t. 2, 1868, p. 186).
Rem. A été spéc. appliqué aux premiers immigrants en Nouvelle-Angleterre et dans les colonies anglaises d'Afrique du Sud et d'Australie.
Prononc.:[], [-]. Étymol. et Hist. 1836 (M. CHEVALIER, Lett. sur l'Amér. du Nord, I, 298 ds BONN., p. 129). Empr. à l'angl. settler « celui qui s'installe dans un nouveau pays, colon » (dep. 1654, DAE et Americanisms, s.v. settler et first settler), dér. de to settle à l'empl. intrans. « s'établir, se fixer (dans un lieu) ».
